St. Andrews choir begins new chapter

Laurinburg, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Choir will begin the new performance season on Oct. 14 by providing music during the 11 a.m. morning worship service at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

In addition to being the first performance of the season, it will be the first performance under the direction of Choir Master Ed Williams.

Williams, who is also the director of music at the First United Methodist Church of Laurinburg, comes to St. Andrews after a long career in the public schools of North Carolina, both in music instruction and administration.

"I've done everything from Pre-K through high school and then adults, but this is my first time really working with this age group," said Williams. "It is a great experience for me because these young adults love their choir and they are so eager to learn all types of music."

In addition to working with the choir, Williams also provides vocal instruction to University students.

"I want to share with my students the love and knowledge of choral and vocal music that I gained from my college professors," said Williams.

The choir's second performance will be the fall choir concert at St. Andrews on Oct. 15. The free and open to the public concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Hagan Choral Room of the Vardell Building. Seating is limited so those interested in attending are asked to arrive early.

"We've had a lot of fun preparing for this concert," Williams said. "We are going to change the beginning of the program a bit from concerts in recent years. We will start with the National Anthem and then end with the Alma Mater and A Parting Blessing. I feel that beginning with the National Anthem is a wonderful way to start a concert and show our love for our country."

The St. Andrews University Choir will be joined by the Sandhills Consort and will perform a piece written by Alice Wilkins, who heads the St. Andrews Community Music Program.

Additional songs for the performance include Can You Feel the Love Tonight, Love in Any Language, True Light and Soli Deo Gloria.

"We are looking forward to having the opportunity to perform for the community," Williams said.

The choir will also perform during morning worship on Nov. 4 at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church and during the annual Christmas Concert on Dec. 2.
