St. Andrews Hunter Seat extends regional lead with win

The St. Andrews University Hunter Seat Team expanded the regional points lead with a win Saturday at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition hosted by the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.

St. Andrews earned 45 points to finish ahead of East Carolina University’s 37 points.

In the regional standings, St. Andrews holds an 18-point advantage over UNC-Chapel Hill. North Carolina State, East Carolina University and UNC-Charlotte round out the top five.

On the individual points side, Katie Hansen and Kim Graves are first and second in the Cacchione Cup standings. Every open rider who finishes the regular season with the most combined flat and fences points within their region advances to the IHSA Nationals to compete for the cup.

At the show on Saturday, Sami Cram was the high point rider, finishing ahead of Kelly McGuinness from UNC-Chapel Hill.

“Great draws, great judging, a very fun and successful day for the whole team,” said Cram of the day.

Cram earned first place in Intermediate Flat B and Novice Fences. Also contributing first place finishes were Kim Graves in Open Flat, Katie Hansen in Open Fences, Kali Cram in Novice Flat C, and Cami Glaff in Advanced Walk, Trot, Canter.

Glaff’s win means she has pointed out of this division and qualified for the regionals. Also qualifying for the regionals were Alexandra Fullerton in Novice Flat, Shiloh Kozlowski in Walk/Trot, Kali Cram in Novice Flat and Sami Cram in Novice Over Fences.

Adding to the team’s points total with second place finishes were Hansen in Open Flat, Graves in Open Fences, and Rae Rucker in Walk/Trot. Kali Cram added a third place finish in Intermediate Fences. Jameson Crandall was fourth in Advanced Walk, Trot, Canter and Shiloh Kozlowski was fourth in Beginner Walk, Trot, Canter. Nikki Napoleon added a fifth place finish in Novice Flat.

“I am so proud of how the students rode this weekend,” said Peggy McElveen, equestrian director. “Some of the horse draws were challenging, but our students rode well and excelled in adapting their ride to what the horse needed. Today was a prime example of good catch riding, which you can’t do at home, our riders settled and reassured the horses, and showed off their skills.”
