St. Andrews Pipe Band wins Stone Mountain Games

The St. Andrews University Pipe Band earned first place in the Grade III competition at the Stone Mountain Highland Games in Georgia.

Atlanta finished second with Grandfather Mountain third.

"The Stone Mountain Highland Games are seen as the end of the circuit/season in the Eastern United States for the calendar year and for many years have held the designation of Southern Championships,” said Pipe Major Bill Caudill. “The St. Andrews University Pipe Band was elated to bring this Championship award back home to Laurinburg. Our last win at Stone Mountain was in 2009 in what was the last of an unprecedented 5-year sweep of the event.”

The band received a first and second from the two piping judges and first place finishes from the ensemble and drumming judges.

“We were playing with five members who are in their first fall with us, four of whom had not participated in pipe band or in competitions prior to four weeks ago in Charleston,” said Caudill. “We pulled this selection together in only a month and were able to get it good enough to win. I’m especially proud of the work that some of the less-experienced players put in to make this all possible.”

Band members also impressed the judges in solo competition.

Freshman Stuart Marshall won the overall trophy for Amateur Grade IV Senior competition in the first heat of the competition with aggregate scores for 1st in Piobaireachd and 1st in the 2/4 March. Sophomore Dalton Marshall was 1st in heat two of the event, taking 1st in Piobaireachd and 2nd in 2/4 March. Both received above grade level designations by their respective judges.

Community members of the band dominated the Amateur Grade IV Junior competition. Patrick Johnson won the 2/4 March Event and was 2nd in Piobaireachd. Brother Evan Johnson was 3rd in Piobaireached and 4th in 2/4 March. These brothers also received above grade level designations by their respective judges.

“This finishes up a great contest season for all of these young pipers,” said Caudill. “Patrick Johnson is currently ranked at the top of Grade IV Junior Piper in the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association with his brother Evan in the number two spot. Both will be upgraded to Grade III next year. Dalton Marshall is currently among the top 10 of the Over-18 Grade IV Senior class and will be upgraded to Grade III for next year, as will his brother Stuart.”

Pipers were not the only members of the band with individual success. Senior Billy Gehringer was named Drummer of the Day in Amateur Grade I Drumming and received the Alex Duthart Memorial Trophy. He won both the March/Stathspey and Reel and the Hornpipe and Jig events for his grade.
