SAU Hunter Seat Team maintains lead

Laurinburg, N.C. – Hurricane Sandy moved the start time of the St. Andrews University hosted Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Competition but did not change the outcome as St. Andrews earned a first place tie with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“I’m glad we could move the start of the show up so that competitors traveling to the coast could make it home in daylight,” said Equestrian Director Peggy McElveen. “Tying with UNC Chapel Hill actually increased our regional point lead to 22 points. St. Andrews has been consistent at all of the shows while ECU, NCSU, Chapel Hill and Charlotte have switched off on their placings. Consistency from our coaches and riders pays off in the long run.”

The current regional standings have St. Andrews ahead of East Carolina University, UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina State and UNC – Charlotte.

First place finishes were contributed to the team total by Michelle Eld in Novice Flat A, Kim Graves in Open Fences C, Kali Cram in Intermediate Flat C, Regi Barasch in Intermediate Flat B, Sami Cram in Intermediate Fences A, Chandalyn Chrzanowski in Novice Flat, Rae Rucker in Walk/Trot A. Brandon Hill in Advance Walk/Trot/Canter D and Kirsten Farley in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter G.

Earning second place finishes were Kim Graves in Open Flat A, Catherine McDowell in Novice Flat B, Madison Edwards in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, Sarah Lishen in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter, Mia DiPillo Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter C, Sam Taylor Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter E, and Jameson Crandall in Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter F.

Third place finishes were contributed by Katie Hansen in Open Flat C, Caitlyn Woychik in Novice Fences D and Dara Corbett in Novice Flat H, Earning fourth place finishes were Hansen in Open Fences A, Park Hoey in Intermediate Flat A, Keli Van Den Heuvel in Intermediate Fences C, Laura Allen in Novice Fences B, and Rachel Dockery in Novice Flat G.

“We were only able to pull today off with all of the help, support and flexibility from the staff and students,” said Assistant Coach Rob Jacobs. “The horses were caught off guard a bit but adjusted well also. We rode well as a team but will not get too comfortable with our lead.”

SAU Dressage Team third

In the first show of the season, the St. Andrews University Dressage Team finished third in the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) competition held at Averett University.

Host school Averett finished first with North Carolina State University second.

“This is a rebuilding year for us as five seniors graduated,” said Coach Jackie Dwelle. “They were the base of our team. It takes time to develop riders into competitive dressage riders.”

Kristen Parker earned high point rider of the day in earning first place in Intro Test B. Sarah Jones was third in Intro Test C. Lindsey Agaliotis was fourth in First Level Test 1 while Brianna Carter was fifth in Training Level Test 2.

“I am pleased with these results,” Dwelle said. “We have some work to do and I know the team members are up for the challenge. Special thanks to team captain and assistant coach Lindsey Agaliotis for her leadership, instructional and coaching skills and administrative work. She has taken on a lot of extra duties this semester and I am really impressed with the leadership she has displayed.”
