St. Andrews begins MBA winter term with wealth of experience

Laurinburg, N.C. - Monday night St. Andrews University held the first class of the Master in Business Administration winter term with new students joining the first cohort.

"One of the nice things about our program is that we are able to add students at four entry points," said Dr. Robert J. Hopkins, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the University. "We have 22 students now and hope to add another five to 10 students in the spring in this same cohort."

The courses being offered this winter are Information Systems Management and Quantitative Research Methods. Teaching the courses are Dr. Doug Glass and Dr. Wayne Freeman, both of whom have practical experience in the subject areas.

Assistant Professor of Business and Economics at St. Andrews, Glass learned about Management Information Systems from the ground up.

"In college, I learned Fortran as a computer language and wrote several programs applicable to industry," said Glass. "I readily became familiar with the resounding impact computers and data manipulation could have on industry. As an engineer, I saw how much of a bottleneck the MIS department could become and placing data as available to the individuals became a goal."

In 1986, Glass was given the responsibility of implementing personal computers for the office staff of Ametek.

"I learned the hard way to manipulate the computers and data to produce reports needed," Glass said. He completed his MBA in 1987 and would earned his DBA in Information Technology Management in 2006.

"Each successive iteration demonstrated the need for managers to have a firm grasp on an integrated approach to MIS," Glass said. "Also, each manager must have a working knowledge of primary software applications in order to succeed.

"This MBA 605 course prepares participants for utilizing a few primary software pieces to the intermediate level, assists them in understanding research techniques and further introduces MIS policy making that will directly impact efficiency and effectiveness in which ever industry they are engaged."

Like Glass, Freeman has years of experience putting business theory into practice. A 1981 graduate of Scotland High School, Freeman went on to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he completed his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in three years. He took a job with the City of Raleigh as a right-of-way agent before being promoted to community development project manager in 1988. Three years later he was named housing and real estate manager. During that time, he earned a Master's of Public Administration at North Carolina State University.

In 1990, Freeman enrolled in the MBA program at Duke University, completing the program in a year. In 1997, Freeman joined The Nickerson Group and moved to Laurinburg to open a branch office. His boss called within a month to close the company, but gave Freeman the office equipment and the rights to two contracts. With that start, Freeman Consulting was launched in November 1997. The named was changed to Training and Development Associates (TDA) two years later.

"I think of myself as a practitioner that is significantly informed by business theory," Freeman said. "Finishing the Ph.D. (in Public Administration) in 2009 was a natural progression given my lifelong interest in learning and growing a successful business."

Success in his business has been steady, with contracts across the nation including one with the BRAC Regional Task Force to develop a comprehensive growth plan for the 11 county region affected by changes at Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base.

"I am very careful in my business to make sure that I don't pursue management fads as I grow my business," Freeman said. "I am always doing my research and seeing what the evidence suggests. From my company's internal approach to talent recruitment and retention approach to the advice we give our consulting clients, it is based on sound evidence-based practice. My thinking may not always result in following the practice of the majority, but the decisions are always well-informed and intentional.

"To a large extent, this is a major goal of the quantitative methods course I am teaching. There is a lot of information available to a business leader; they need to be able to sort the good from the bad. The goal is identify quality relevant information that can be used to make well-informed business decisions. My hope is that this course helps in this regard."

While a small window of opportunity remains to enroll in the MBA Program at St. Andrews University for the winter term, St. Andrews is currently accepting applications for the spring term that begins in February.
