SAU Hunter Seat Team places fifth in national competition

By Kim Graves
Equestrian Intern

Bridgewater, Va. - Winter weather warnings did not stop the St. Andrews University Hunter Seat team from traveling to Bridgewater College in Harrisonburg, Va., for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Tournament of Champion’s Winter Classic over the weekend.

The Knights, who currently lead the region, competed against 22 of the top schools in the country to earn a fifth place finish. Bridgewater College’s split team took first and second with Delaware Valley third and Berry College fourth.

Sophomore Cami Glaff, junior Jake Hobson, and seniors Katie Hansen, Kimberly Graves, Mia Dipillo, Sami Cram and Kali Cram competed under the coaching of Matt Arrigon.

“I’m really proud of how everyone rode today,” said Arrigon “We had Jake showing for the first time ever and Cami moved up a division. Everyone rose to the occasion and had great sportsmanship. I think one thing that we benefited from was our decision to not watch the horse’s school on Friday. Some times riders forget to just ride the horse they have and not the one that schooled yesterday.”

Dipillo brought home the highest placing of all St. Andrews riders when she won the Walk/Trot/Canter class for the team.

“This was a great win for me today!” said Dipillo. “Knowing that in a couple of months I will be graduating and I get to say that I won a class like this my senior year is really special”

Third place finishes went to Graves in Open Over Fences, Glaff in Novice Flat, and Kali Cram in Intermediate Flat.

Hobson placed fourth in his first show ever in Walk/Trot. Fifth place finishes went to Sami Cram in Intermediate Over Fences and Hansen in Open Flat, with Glaff placing seventh in Novice Flat.

“It was a great show,” said Kali Cram “ Everyone rode their absolute best and we had some fun horses! Its fun and rewarding to have every rider bring home a ribbon at a national event. With a team full of seniors, we pulled all the knowledge and confidence that Ashley Duda, Matt and Rob have given us in the last 4 years together and with that, we gained great results. We’re riding against the top 20 teams in the country so it feels good to be where we are as we head into the spring show season.”

The Knights next IHSA Hunter Seat show is this coming Saturday at the Suzanne Mott Dansby Arena at the St. Andrews Equestrian Center.
