SAU Hunter Seat team wins IHSA Competition

Laurinburg, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Hunter Seat team won the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Hunter Seat competition held Saturday at the Equestrian Center.

St. Andrews earned 43 team points to finish ahead of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s by 6 points. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, East Carolina University and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington rounded out the top five.

The victory extends the St. Andrews regional lead to 29.

“We had a good day,” said Coach Matt Arrigon. “Our team put in a lot of strong rides and were able to show the results of the hard work they have been putting in.”

St. Andrews riders were so strong that there was a three-way tie for the day’s High Point Rider between Abigail Skillman, Sami Cram and Kali Cram. The tie was broken by a bareback ride on western horses. Sami Cram earned the win, with Reserve High Point rider going to Kali Cram and Honorable Mention to Skillman.

"It was the first time that I got to ride both classes at the same show and both draws really worked out in my favor,” said Skillman. “I got the horses I was hoping for in each of them. For the hack off we all just were ready to have a good time. It didn't matter who won the ribbon, we were all proud and happy for each other. It was a really fun day."

First place finishes on the day were contributed by Caitlin Karolak, Katie Hansen, Cami Glaff, Kali Cram, Rachaell Dockery, Shiloh Kozlowski, Sami Cram, Skillman, Nikki Napoloeone, Alexandra Fullerton, Madison Edwards, Jake Hobson, Tori Burkey and Julie Griffin.

Contributing second place finishes to the effort were Kim Graves, Tara Algieri, Anastasia MacNaught, Lacy Burke, Glaff, and Amanda Rucker.
Third place finishes were provided by Keli Van Den Heuvel, Sam Taylor and Kirsten Farley. Finishing fourth in respective divisions were Hansen, Fullerton, and Heather Moch.

Park Hoey contributed a fifth place finish and Chandalyn Chrzanowski finished sixth.

These strong finishes helped Graves and Hansen qualify for the IHSA Hunter Seat Regionals to be held March 22 at the Equestrian Center. Fullerton, Sami Cram and Kali Cram each qualified for a second class at the Regionals. Previous qualified St. Andrews riders included Shiloh Kozlowski, Glaff, Hoey, Catherine McDowell and Regina Barasch.

Graves currently leads the Cacchione Cup Points for the region with Hansen a close second.

"It was the epitome of team work - from the staff to the students to the horses,” said Equestrian Program Director Peggy McElveen. “I have never seen such a huge show run so well. The students had their ‘A’ game on and rode and worked together so well. What a great day to be a St. Android!"

The Hunter Seat team next competes on Feb. 24 at East Carolina University. The Equestrian Center will host a pair of Western Shows this weekend.
