SAU Western Team sweeps weekend, extends regional lead

Laurinburg, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Western Team earned back-to-back High Point Team honors at a pair of Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) shows held over the weekend at the Equestrian Center.

St. Andrews won Saturday’s show with 33 points and Sunday’s show with 37 points. North Carolina State University was second both days with 28 and 33 points respectively.

“I am so proud of my team,” said Coach Carla Wennberg. “They are an amazing group, wonderful horsemen who care about horses first and about each other. Cannot be more proud as a coach.”

On Saturday, Ella Brave earned High Point Rider to go along with her win in open horsemanship and her second place finish in reining.

Tyler Gritzuk earned a first place finish in intermediate horsemanship II while also serving as one of the two western horse show chairs responsible for making sure the show run smoothly.

“For me, it’s actually enough to make me forget about the fact that I have to show,” he said. “My placing on Saturday was great but I wish I could have gotten the team more points on Sunday. But I am still very excited that our team won both days.”

Additional first place finishes were turned in by Vicky Wiese in beginning horsemanship, Kali Cram in advanced horsemanship, and Katie Mosca in novice horsemanship.

Strong second place finishes were turned in by Brittany Powell in advanced horsemanship, Erin Hudson in intermediate horsemanship and Michelle Hustad in open horsemanship. Sami Cram was third in novice horsemanship with Rae Rucker and Kelsey Jones contributing fifth place finishes in beginning horsemanship and novice horsemanship respectively.

On Sunday, the ribbons lined up again. Hustad took first in open horsemanship with Brittany Powell first in advanced horsemanship, Rucker first in beginner horsemanship, Brave first in reining and Erica Leseur first in novice horsemanship.

Gritzuk was second in intermediate horsemanship II with Lindsey Agaliotis third in advanced horsemanship and Mosca third in novice horsemanship. Jake Nix and Brave finished fourth in novice horsemanship and open horsemanship respectively.

The Western Team will compete again at home Feb. 22 for the conclusion of the regular season before hosting the regional finals on Feb. 23.
