SAU Dressage Team takes third at weekend competition

Laurinburg, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Dressage Team earned third place at the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) competition held at the Equestrian Center on Saturday.

The St. Andrews B Team finished sixth on the day.

The results leave St. Andrews just one point behind Averett University in the regional points standings with two shows left in the regular season.

St. Andrews senior Lindsey Agaliotis was the high point rider for the day after her first place finish in First Level Test 2.

“Lindsey had an outstanding ride,” said Coach Jackie Dwelle. “She had several scores of 9 out of 10 for various movements on her test which was also the most advanced test that was offered in the competition.”

Hannah Firth and Sarah Jones were third in their respective classes. Megan Pustarfi was fourth in her class with Abigail Skillman finishing fifth. Brianna Carter and Bridget Newman contributed sixth place finishes.

Agaliotis is in second place in the regional standings for First Level, just one point behind the regional leader. Carter is tied for second in Upper Training. Jones leads the region with a one-point lead in Lower Training. Kirsten Parker maintains a commanding lead at the Introductory Level.

In addition to the main competition, a Dressage Seat Equitation competition was held.

“Dressage Seat Equitation has been added successfully in other IDA regions so we decided to try it out,” said Dwelle. “It is currently not a recognized class but we hope to have a national championship division in the near future. The format is the same as any equitation class where riders are judged on their position and effectiveness. The horse is not judged, just the rider.”

The results saw Parker first in Class 2 with teammate Logan Teeter right behind. In Class 1, Claire Pollard earned second with Elizabethe Weeks fourth.

The Dressage Team travels to Averett University Feb. 23 and 24 for a double-header weekend to close out the regular season. The results of those shows will determine the regional champion team that will go on to represent the region at the national championships in April.
