SAU to hold ‘A Musical Celebration of National Tartan Day'

Laurinburg, N.C. - St. Andrews University will hold 'A Musical Celebration of National Tartan Day' at 7 p.m. on April 6 in Avinger Auditorium.

The free concert is a part of the annual Scottish Heritage Weekend at the University.

"This concert will feature the St. Andrews University Pipe Band and the Concert Choir performing the music of Scotland," said Pipe Major Bill Caudill. "It is a great way to celebrate National Tartan Day."

Originally founded in 1989 as a celebration of the 250th anniversary of the coming of the first group of Highland Scots to North Carolina, the “Our Scottish Heritage” Symposium provides an unparalleled opportunity for persons interested in Scottish and Scottish-American history and culture to learn from the top scholars in their fields. The Charles Bascombe Shaw Memorial Scottish Heritage Symposium continues this forum for study and interaction for anyone interested in Scottish history, culture and tradition.

The weekend includes presentations by the Lord Rector of the University of St. Andrews Scotland Alistair Moffat, Dr. David Caldwell, Dr. Gerard Carruthers and June Skinner Sawyers Friday and Saturday. Friday evening also includes the 24th Annual Scottish Heritage Awards Banquet with awards presented to Sawyers and Dr. John Sprague.

The final event of the weekend is the annual Kirkin’ of the Tartans Worship Service at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church on Sunday morning.
