Pieces of Us Senior Art Show at St. Andrews Opens Friday

Pieces of Us Senior Art Show Postcard

Laurinburg, N.C. - The St. Andrews University Art Program presents the 2013 Senior Art Show Pieces of Us beginning with an opening reception Friday at 8 p.m. in the Vardell Gallery.

The reception is free and open to the public.

Featuring the works of seniors Keith Davis, Victoria Bickett and Nasra Chatman, the show will run through May 4.

The show will include a variety of works. Bickett will present oil and acrylic paintings in addition to a few ceramic pieces while Davis will be presenting mostly sculptures with one pencil drawing. Chatman will present pencil drawings, watercolor pieces and digital work.

“My work is heavily inspired by a Japanese art form called anime,” Chatman said. “Though a majority of my artwork is influenced by this style, you'll find various realistic forms among my collection as well.”

With the variety of pieces, it is not surprising to learn that the artists come from different starting points as well.

“I’ve always been interested in art,” Bickett said. “My mom is an artist and so is my grandmother.”

Chatman also has always had a place in her life for art. “I've always loved art as a kid. I have many fond memories of doing various drawings. What was a hobby soon became a passion so to speak.

"I chose St. Andrews' art program because of the diversity of styles that it offers,” Chatman added. “While attending the program, I've had many experiences that I couldn't have imagine having. These experiences strengthened my foundation as an artist.”

Davis came from a different art background, having truly found his skills through the program.

“What got me interested in the art program was that I was able to do something using my hands and being creative,” he said. “I did not know that I had ability to do some of the projects but with the help of (Professor of Art) Stephanie McDavid I found that I had a natural talent in this field.”

The trio of artists will also be going in slightly different directions after graduation.

Bickett plans to continue her education and “eventually teach.”

“My goal is to become either a comic book illustrator or a concept artist,” said Chatman. “After graduation, I plan on increasing my portfolio even further with unique character designs. I’ll be working until then.”

Davis shared, “After graduation I plan to find a job and enroll into a barbering program to be a licensed barber.”

Pieces of Us will remain in the Vardell Gallery through May 4 and may be viewed Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
