St. Andrews names new Assistant Dean of Students

Elizabeth Hernandez

Laurinburg, N.C. - St. Andrews University has named Elizabeth Hernandez the Assistant Dean of Students for Student Engagement.

“We are pleased to announce this promotion,” said Vice President for Administration and Dean of Students Glenn Batten. “She will be responsible for developing new programs to link co-curricular programming with our curricular program, enhancing our service learning activities and creating a new model for vocational discernment in order to help students understand the link between their educational and career goals.”

It is the creating and developing of programs that Hernandez is most excited about with this newly created position.

“I am most looking forward to having the ability to develop and integrate a completely new program,” she said. “Focus on service learning and helping students develop an understanding of vocation is critical to a student’s intellectual growth and self-awareness. This new model will help students understand the link between their educational and career goals.”

Hernandez will be working with faculty to incorporate this new programming into the curriculum while also seeking out service learning opportunities.

“St. Andrews has always done a great job of developing the ‘whole person,’” Hernandez said. “We want our students to take advantage of the many great things St. Andrews has to offer from the moment they begin their journey as a St. Andrews student. St. Andrews is the type of University where a student can start a club, play a sport, act in a play, study abroad or ride.

“I want our students to take advantage of these opportunities from day one,” she continued. Also, as a member of the NAIA, this program is a natural link to the Champions of Character program and will enable us to strengthen and expand our efforts in this area.”

In addition to her work in the new positions, Hernandez will continue to serve as a visiting faculty member in writing and serving as the faculty athletic representative to the NAIA.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunities I have had at St. Andrews University,” she said. “I came to work here in the fall of 2000 after graduating from college in May. I have been able to work in Admissions, Athletics, Residence Life, and am a member of the faculty.

“(Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the University) Dr. Bob Hopkins and (Associate Dean) Dr. Edna Ann Loftus have been extremely supportive of my goals, and I am thankful for their guidance,” Hernandez continued. “I would like to thank Glenn Batten and (President) Paul Baldasare for this opportunity as I start a new chapter in my life with St. Andrews.”

Hernandez holds a B.A. from Belmont Abbey College and a M.A. from The University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She is also currently pursuing an Ed.D. at Wingate University and is entering her second year in the program.
