Summer at St. Andrews Camp deadline approaching

Laurinburg, N.C. - The registration deadline for the 2013 Summer at St. Andrews Academic Program is just over a week away.

The first year program at St. Andrews is for rising 8th through 12th graders interested in a premier academic experience on a university campus. The camp includes four consecutive one-week long sessions. The curriculum is designed as a one-week module so students can attend multiple sessions and continue through to the next level without repetition.

“We are excited about this opportunity,” said Vice President for Finance Terry Laughter who is helping to coordinate the program. “We have around 60 students signed up and the interest continues to grow as parents start working on summer plans.”

With a registration deadline of June 1, the sessions begin on Sunday July 7 with check-in from 1 - 3 p.m. Each week-long session concludes with a closing ceremony on Saturday from 10 - 11:30 a.m. Start dates for the other three sessions are July 14, 18 and 28.

Nicole Serra has been hired to serve as the camp director. Currently a language processing and comprehension teacher for learning disabled students at the Linda-Mood Bell Learning center in Manhattan, Serra holds a bachelor of arts degree in English Literature and Theatre from the University of Miami, Florida.

Among the courses being taught in the camp are Writing 101: Fiction & Poetry, Writing 102: Journalism, Veterinary Science, Fashion Design, Game Art Design, Forensic Science, Studio Art and Business and Entrepreneurship.

Dr. Laura Kellam will be leading the Veterinary Science courses which will include trips to the St. Andrews Equestrian Center. The veterinarian-in-residence and assistant professor in equine studies at St. Andrews is responsible for the veterinary care and maintenance of the horses on the campus. Students in this course can expect to have the opportunity to observe real veterinary science in practice with additional trips to local veterinary offices.

Students in Writing 101 will be studying with Michaela Papa, a graduate of Hofstra University. She has worked as a writer for Discover Girl’s Magazine. She will have students writing short stories, personal narratives and poetry.

St. Andrews’ own Chris McDavid and Jim Putnam will be working with the Game Art Design students.

“The goal of the course is an increased familiarity with the processes behind creating animated 3D objects in a computer game and printed using the new 3D printing technology,” said Putnam. “The software and programs employed are industry-standard tools used by game design houses for commercial and independent games.”

Forensic Science students will be working with Tuesday James, a Master’s degree student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. She is currently working on a pair of research projects; one on the age determination of body fluids such as saliva and the other a test a company’s portable version on an instrument they have developed for military use. Students in the class will focus on the history of forensic science, proper investigation techniques, crime scene analysis and case studies. Classes will be held in the John Blue Lab in the Morgan-Jones Science Center, allowing students to perform experiments including fluid analysis, spatter analysis, decomposition rates and more.
