SAU Pipe Band wins first competition of the season

The St. Andrews University Pipe Band won the Grade III band contest at the Charleston Scottish Games over the weekend.

Second place went to Atlanta with Grandfather Mountain third.

“Overall I was very pleased with the performance of the band on this first outing,” said Pipe Major Bill Caudill. “Actually my goals were not on winning, but rather just pulling off a good performance. We ended up getting some ‘magic’ going on Friday night at the hotel parking lot with our practice there, and everyone was relaxed and did the best they could on the field on Saturday. The band members were absolutely elated to be announced as winners and getting to march off in front of everyone else - particularly in light of the fact that we've only been together a short time.”

For Amateur Grade III Piping the competition was divided into two heats. Sophomore Stuart Marshall earned first places in Piobaireachd, March, and Strathspey and Reel in Heat A, giving him the overall win for Heat A with two “above grade level” designations from judges. Community band member Evan Johnson was third in Piobaireachd, second in March and fifth in Strathspey and Reel. Patrick Johnson, also a community band member, was fourth in March and fifth in Strathspey and Reel.

In Heat B, junior Dalton Marshall was first in March. Freshman Wyatt Brown was second in March and first in Strathspey and Reel, earning an above grade level from the judges in the latter. Freshman Joe Calvo was fourth in March and fifth in Strathspey and Reel.

In Amateur Grade IV Snare Drumming, freshman Regina Drake-Parguey was first in both Quick March Medley and 2/4 March, winning the overall trophy for that grade.

“They're now really excited about our next play which will be here in town for the Scotland County Highland Games on Oct. 5,” said Caudill. “We're really excited about this in particular as our ‘arch rivals,’ the Atlanta Pipe Band, are coming to play against us as is the Greater Richmond band.

“Also, we really hope to get a good turnout from the SAU Community for that one in particular as it is rare that folks would get a chance to see us play against another really good band such as this locally,” he said.

The band will complete the fall competitive season on Oct. 19 at the Stone Mountain Games.
