Hunter Seat Team wins home opener by 13

SAU Hunter Seat Team poses with ribbons after winning Oct 5 competition

Laurinburg, NC - The St. Andrews University Hunter Seat Team won their first Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition at home Saturday by 13 points over co-reserve champion teams East Carolina University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

St. Andrews earned 47 points, just two points shy of a perfect competition score. Rounding out the top five were the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Duke University.

“I could not ask for a better way to start the year,” said Equestrian Program Director Peggy McElveen. “They are good students they worked hard raising the bar not only in their riding, but also in the way they care for the horses. This group of students is prepared to spend as much time as it takes to do a thorough job with anything they are involved in.”

On the individual side, four St. Andrews riders finished in a tie for High Point Rider. Kimberley O’Keefe, Kelsey Kocher, Emily McBee and Cami Glaff earned 14 points each and all answered the tie-breaking question correctly. McElveen called the tie, with Glaff being given the ribbon as it was also her birthday. O’Keefe was officially designated the Reserve High Point Rider.

Regina Barasch, Madison Edwards, Jake Hobson, Tara Algieri, Julie Griffin, Mary Thomson and Briley Braden contributed first place finishes.

Janelle Petruska, Emilee Wilson, Grace Wadford, Shiloh Kozlowski, Nicole Napoleone and Samantha Taylor contributed second place finishes.

Barasch, Caitlyn Woychik, and Alexandra Fullerton finished third in their respective divisions. Danielle Eads, Amy Wrozek, Dara Corbett, Sarah Lishen, Michelle Eld and Kristen Farley contributed fourth place finishes.

Napoleone, Jessica Story and Janie Malott finished fifth in their divisions with Keli Van Den Heuvel finishing sixth.

“We had a good day a very, very good day, it was long but good all the same,” said Coach Matt Arrigon.  “We learned a lot and it is a good start to the year, but we must be careful that we don’t get complacent.”

The team will compete again on Oct. 20 at Duke University. In the meantime, the Equestrian program will host prospective students during an Admissions Open House Oct. 18 – 19.
