SAU Show Team has successful outing

Several members of the St. Andrews University Equestrian Show Team competed at the Greensboro Fall horse show over the weekend.

Show Team Coach Kelsi Peterson brought Amy Wrozek, Marissa Azua, Keli Van Den Heuvel, Grace Wadford and Rachaell Dockery to the show in Greensboro for competition.

“The teamwork among the SAU Equestrians never ceases to amaze me,” said Peterson. “The students are on top of everything I ask them to do, and are always jumping up to assist a teammate, from tag-teaming barn chores to sharing knowledge and resources to help the less experienced riders get to the show ring. I love watching them interact and work together to be effective, efficient and well-rounded horse women.”

That teamwork resulted in a series of top finishes for the riders.

Wrozek, riding her own Code Red, earned a pair of second places on Saturday and a pair of first places Sunday in the 3’6” - 4’ jumpers in her first competition with the St. Andrews Show Team.

Azua, riding Kilfinnae, earned two second place finishes and a third place in Walk/Trot/Canter. She also earned fourth place in the Intercollegiate class on Saturday.

Van Den Heuvel rode Cynasure to several third and fourth place finishes in the pre-adult hunters.
Wadford, riding Allegro, earned first, second and two third place finishes in pre-adult hunters to earn the division’s Champion status on Saturday.

Dockery also rode Allegro, earning a second and sixth place in the Intercollegiate classes on Saturday and a second and third place in the Sedgefield hunter classes Sunday afternoon.

“Rachaell was originally set to show another St. Andrews horse this weekend, but he came off the trailer with a minor injury,” Peterson explained. “After talking with Dr. (Laura) Kellam (St. Andrews veterinarian in residence), we decided to be safe rather than sorry and let him rest for the weekend.”

Dockery took the challenge in stride. “Each show is a learning experience; you just have to go with the flow and relax.”

The Show Team will next compete Nov. 1-3 at the NCHJA Medal Finals in Raleigh. The Equestrian Center will host an Equestrian Focused Admissions Open House this weekend.
