Halloween in the Park promotes family friendly activity

Laurinburg, NC - Families looking for a safe Halloween activity are invited to Halloween in the Park Oct. 31 at the James L. Morgan Recreation Complex on Turnpike Road.

The activity, specifically for children 12 and under, costs $2 per vehicle, and will begin at 6 p.m. Adult supervision is required and costumes must be family friendly.

“Scotland County Parks & Rec identified the need to provide a safe environment for trick or treating,” said Elizabeth Hernandez, assistant dean of students for student engagement at St. Andrews University, an event co-sponsor. “Not everyone in the community lives in a neighborhood, so this allows us to facilitate a fun opportunity for parents to bring their children and receive candy, participate in games and win prizes.”

Children will receive a bag for candy before moving in groups of eight through carnival games, storytelling and a haunted maze guided by members of the St. Andrews men’s soccer team, men’s and women’s swim teams, men’s and women’s basketball teams, women’s lacrosse team, softball team and volleyball team.

Additional partners for the event include the Storytelling & Arts Center, the Chamber of Commerce- YPN-Scotland, SmartStart, Scotland County Public Buildings & Grounds, Laurinburg Police and EMS Departments, Carter Lumber, and the Purcell Clinic.

“Our goal is to get the Halloween activities out of neighborhoods,” said Roylin Hammond, director of Scotland County EMS. “Our primary concern is the safety of the children in our community and getting them off the public streets makes it safer for everyone.”

Newton agrees, “It is a safe, supervised, family friendly Halloween event. Our goal is to have 2000 children participate this year. We couldn’t do this without St. Andrews. They are our primary sponsor and the workforce that will keep things moving during the event.”

It is a collaboration that fits in with the Champions of Character initiative St. Andrews is a part of through the NAIA.

“This is directly in line with what our student-athletes are expected to do through the Champions of Character program,” said Hernandez. “The five core values are integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and servant leadership.”

According to the NAIA Champions of Character website, the characteristics are meant to be shared beyond the campus, “Character shouldn’t just be confined to campus. For it to take hold in all aspect of life means taking the initiative to reach out to others.”

“We are really looking forward to this event,” Hernandez said. “We believe this will become an annual Halloween event for Scotland County.”
