SAU Pipe Band finishes second at Stone Mountain Games

The St. Andrews University Pipe Band finished second at the Stone Mountain Highland Games Grade III band contest over the weekend in Georgia.

“The band put a very strong performance on the field, which in many past years would have easily won the field,” said Pipe Major Bill Caudill. “Nonetheless, the best band this weekend was the Atlanta Pipe Band. I am still very proud of an extremely strong play, our best so far this season by far.”

The Chicago Scots and Grandfather Mountain Highlanders rounded out the top four.

Individual competitions also went well for St. Andrews band members.

In Professional Piping, Caudill was second in Piobaireachd and third in the March, Strathspey and Reel.

Grade III Piping was divided into two heats, with St. Andrews members in both prize lists. In Heat A, junior Dalton Marshall was first with sophomore Stuart Marshall first in Strathspey and Reel and third in March. Stuart Marshall won the heat and earned a full expense paid scholarship to the North American Academy of Piping and Drumming for next summer.

In Heat B, freshman Wyatt Brown took second in Piobaireachd. Community members Patrick and Evan Johnson finished third in Strathspey and Reel and fifth in March and fourth in Strathspey and Reel and fifth in March respectively.

Band Assistant Billy Gehringer earned first place in professional snare drumming, winning the Alex Duthart Memorial Prize. In Grade II snare drumming, junior Mike Iannuzzi won both the MSR and the Hornpipe and Jig. Freshman Jack Donohue won the March and overall prize in Grade III drumming.

“Though we didn’t win we had a great trip and a great play,” said Caudill. “I am very proud of the band and the progress that has been made over the past six weeks.

“We appreciate the support of the many friends who have come out to support us this season,” he added. “Your being there has meant a lot to us.”
