The 2014 MLK Celebration set at St. Andrews University for Jan. 20

Laurinburg, NC - The 2014 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration at St. Andrews University will feature a performance by the Fayetteville State University Choir.

The free event is set for Jan. 20 beginning at 6 p.m. in Avinger Auditorium on the University’s campus.

“We are pleased to have the Fayetteville State University Choir come to perform on our campus,” said Rona Leach McLeod, chair of the planning committee. “The talent this group has demonstrated at events across the country, including at Carnegie Hall just last spring, promises that this will be an extremely entertaining evening for those in attendance.”

Under the direction of Denise Murchison Payton, the Fayetteville State University Choir has a repertoire that includes anthems, spirituals, gospel and standard choral literature from all musical periods. Over the past several years, students from the choir have been represented in the 105 Voice of History at the Kennedy Center, on the Grande Ole Opry Stage and performed special concerts for Former Governor Beverly Perdue for Christmas at the Governor’s Mansion. In April 2013, the FSU Concert Choir presented a Solo Prelude Concert and then joined others for a performance of the Verdi Requiem at Carnegie Hall.

The St. Andrews University Choir will also be performing during the event under the direction of Choir Master Ed Williams.

The event will also include an excerpt from Dr. King’s Drum Major for Justice Instinct speech recited by Scotland County Early College High School student Doni Holloway.

“Doni is a very active member of the community and a well-spoken individual,” said Leach McLeod. “We look forward to his dynamic recitation as a part of this community celebration.”

Student representatives from both campuses will be participating in the program. Both Fayetteville State University Chancellor James Anderson and St. Andrews Campus President Paul Baldasare will also be a part of the program.

“We believe that this will be the first step in a longer term collaborative effort between our two institutions,” said Leach McLeod. “It is a unique partnering of public and private universities and something that has not been done on a wide basis in this area. It seems to me that the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration is a fitting opportunity to start this collaboration as it fits into the model of inclusivity that Dr. King fought so hard to achieve.”
