Public history students work on cross-disciplinary project

Dr. David Herr and Stuart Marshall discussing the art project for public history

Laurinburg, NC - On a recent Monday afternoon, a group of 10 students and one professor sat in the art studio beside the lake at St. Andrews University working intently on small carving projects in front of them.

Sophomore public history major Stuart Marshall walked among the tables, answering questions and demonstrating techniques to achieve the proper depth and texture on the first cross-disciplinary project between public history and art departments.

“We’re in the very frustrating and tedious steps at the moment, but the students have some great designs and are working diligently,” said Marshall, who is leading the project. “I’m impressed.”

The project for the upper level public history students is focused on the history of poster art, with particular focus on the 1950s and 1960s.

“We started with going through the archives to gain insights into the sensibilities of St. Andrews in the early years,” said Dr. David Herr, associate professor of history and chair of the department of liberal and creative arts. “We wanted to get a real feel for the aesthetics of the time.”

After the study of the materials, it came time to design the posters using a true to the time block printing technique in the art studio under the tutelage of Professor of Art Stephanie McDavid.

“It has been a lot of fun,” said McDavid. “Stuart has taken some classes before so he has some of the techniques down in order to take a real leadership role in the studio. It is an exciting opportunity and one that I hope we will be able to continue into the future.”

The printing process is now underway, with initial prints run this week in the studio.

“The project is going well and we are very excited,” Marshall said.

The efforts will continue with some competition to determine which of the prints will be put on display in the coming weeks.
