SAU Dressage finishes second in regular season regional standings

Laurinburg, NC -The St. Andrews University Dressage Team finished the regular season of Intercollegiate Dressage Association (IDA) competition in second place after a tough competition Sunday at the St. Andrews Equestrian Center.

Averett University’s A Team earned first place in the competition with the North Carolina State University B team mere percentage points behind.

Averett won the region by a solid seven points and will host the National competition in a few weeks.

“It was a tough year of competition,” said Dressage Coach Jackie Dwelle. “Averett is a very strong competitor and a worthy Champion for our region. They are hosting Nationals this year and I wish them all the best with the show and representing Region I. We will be there with horses and students to help out and support them.”

St. Andrews may still have a team competing at the National Championships, as there are 12 team spots but only nine regions. Depending on the results of the other regions, St. Andrews may have a strong enough percentage score to earn one of three “wild card” spots.

"There are a total of six regions that are eligible for the wild card slot so we have to wait to see if our overall percentage is in the top three when all the regions end their spring season,” said Dwelle. “If we are not in the top 3 schools, then perhaps Elizabethe Weeks will get the individual wild card slot as the Reserve Champion in the Introductory Division. We just have to wait and see how the math works out when all the schools around the county finish their season.”

In Sunday’s competition, McCall DiMarco earned second place in Training Level Test 1. Weeks was third in Introductory Test B.

Fourth place finishes were contributed by Bridget Newman and Kate Neidrick. Claire Pollard and Abigail Skillman earned fifth place finishes in their respective divisions.
