Science Mentoring in the Nucleus

Tri Beta Mentoring

Laurinburg, NC - Every Wednesday night from 7-9 pm on the St. Andrews University campus, students gather for study tips and mentoring in their science classes from members of Tri Beta and Psi Chi. Seniors Brittany Gunn and Christina Agosto will provide student leadership in the program for the 2014-2015 school year.

“Over the past three years, I have seen students who need extra help in upper level courses,” said Gunn. “While there are tutors available for some lower level courses, the higher level courses are left to fend for themselves.

“The students tell which class they need help in, Christina and I then pair them up with the mentor that is successful in that subject.” Gunn said.

The system works well because of the class experiences of the mentors.

“Combined with the members of Tri Beta, we have taken all the science classes offered here at school,” Agosto said.

But this program isn’t a typical tutoring session.

“We are there to help them make connections with previous knowledge,” Agosto said. “These upper level courses focus on more than what is taught in class.”

Gunn added, “The mentor has successfully completed the class and is choosing to aid the student, whereas with tutoring, the professor normally choses which student is the tutor.”

Because the mentor is familiar with the class from a student perspective, it provides an advantage in the process.

“By having students come, we can prepare them by giving study suggestions and advice on how the professor teaches the class and makes their tests.” said Agosto.

Although both Gunn and Agosto will graduate this spring, both women hope the program continues on for years to come.

“The science department is of good size and we need to get more people involved,” said Agosto. “This program can extend to other majors at St. Andrews to have help available for anyone no matter the major. I hope it will continue on after Brittany and I leave.”

Gunn added, “This program will hopefully create a bridge between upperclassmen and underclassmen. Creating bonds with students will aid in creating a better overall atmosphere at St. Andrews.”
