SAU welcomes second Religious Studies professor

By Maria Dalmasso
Communications Assistant

Laurinburg, NC - St. Andrews University is pleased to announce Assistant Professor of Religious Studies Tim Beach-Verhey.

“I am eager to be a member of a college community that takes its Presbyterian heritage seriously,” said Beach-Verhey. “I am very interested in working with my new colleague, Tanner Capps, to redesign and rebuild the Religious Studies offerings here at St. Andrews.”

Beach-Verhey holds a BA from Hope College and M.Div. from Union Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from Emory University.

He previously taught at Davidson College before serving as a pastor at Faison Presbyterian Church for five years.

“I liked many things about being a pastor,” Beach-Verhey said. “But I also realized that my first love is teaching and I longed to be in an academic setting once again.”

But the academic setting wasn’t the only thing that drew him to St. Andrews.

“When I was at Davidson, I was also the Director of their program for the Theological Exploration of Vocation,” said Beach-Verhey. “So the fact that St. Andrews has a similar grant to help students, faculty, staff, and alumni explore the meaning of vocation was also a draw.”

Beach-Verhey’s favorite course to teach is Theological Response to Contemporary American Culture.

  Dr. Timothy Beach-Verhey

“We come to see that theology is not a musty discipline dedicated to an esoteric topic, but a practical way of engaging with life and world in which we live,” Beach-Verhey said.

In his spare time, Verhey enjoys watching and playing sports, especially basketball.

“I am eager to find a regular pick-up game around campus, where I can take out some of my frustrations and forget about theology for a while,” Beach-Verhey said.

If not a college professor, Beach-Verhey would have continued as a Presbyterian pastor.

“I think the two vocations share a lot in common,” Beach-Verhey said. “Both are about teaching, both are based upon personal relations, and both involve asking the big questions of life and being with people in the midst of all of life’s joys and challenges.”
