Former editor, poet, musician coming to SAU Writers’ Forum

Laurinburg, NC - Former editor of Pembroke Magazine Shelby Stephenson will share some of his work Thursday at the St. Andrews University Writers’ Forum.

Free and open to the public, the Forum begins at 8 p.m. in the Ronald H. Bayes Writers’ Forum Lounge in Orange Hall.

A North Carolina native, Stephenson will be inducted in the North Carolina Literary Hall of Fame in a ceremony on Oct. 12 in Southern Pines. He received the 2001 North Carolina Award in Literature. Additional recognitions include the Bellday Poetry Prize, the Oscar Arnold Young Award, the Zoe Kincaid-Brockman Award, the Brockman-Campbell Award, the Bright Hill Press Chapbook Prize and the Playwright’s Fund of North Carolina Chapbook Prize

Stephenson has published numerous collections of poetry including the 2014 collection, The Hunger of Freedom. His 2008 collection Family Matters: Homage to July, the Slave Girl, won the Bellday Poetry Prize. He also has the poetic documentary Plankhouse with photos by Roger Manley to his credit.

In addition to his writing credentials, Stephnson has a series of music CDs to his credit, including 2012’s Shelby & Linda Stephenson Sing Don Gibson and 2007’s When Country Was Country.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a Master’s Degree from the University of Pittsburgh and received a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
