SAU celebrates top donors at annual event

Campus President Paul Baldasare and US Senator Richard Burr

Campus President Paul Baldasare and US Senator Richard Burr at the Tower Club event Oct. 2.

Laurinburg, NC - St. Andrews University held a celebration Thursday evening to recognize top donors and Laurinburg Area Campaign leaders.

“This is an annual event to thank everyone who provided leadership to the Laurinburg Area Campaign as well as our top donors,” said Campus President Paul Baldasare.

Laurinburg Area Campaign Co-Chairs Jim and Frances Willis led the campaign and coordinated volunteers with the assistance of division leaders Richard Massey, Susan Covington, Mac Doubles, Frank Buie, Mike Coughenour and John Clark.

“This was the 19th year we’ve had a goal of raising $500,000 in the community,” said Baldasare. “And for the 19th year, we have been successful in meeting that goal due to the volunteer leadership and support of this community.”

The fundraising effort raised $506,545 for the University.

In addition to the social gathering and reception, the event included a moderated session with United States Senator Richard Burr.

“I want to thank each of you for the support you have shown for St. Andrews,” Burr said to the assembly. “Everyone in this room understands the importance of taking individual responsibility to give back to our community. I am grateful for your participation in supporting this school.”

This is Burr’s second speaking engagement on the campus, having delivered the Commencement address in 2011.

During the session Thursday, Burr spoke on issues related to the economy, rural economic development, privacy, military, health care, campaigning and education.

“I get to look at North Carolina from a different perspective,” Burr said. “When we look at someone’s willingness to build a company in North Carolina, we’ve got it wrong. We annually produce the second largest pool of college graduates in the United States. That workforce is our greatest asset, and St. Andrews is a key part of that fabric.”
