SAU Hunter Seat Team finishes third at home show

Laurinburg, NC - The St. Andrews University Hunter Seat Team finished third at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) competition held over the weekend at the Equestrian Center.

“Eight schools competed and St. Andrews placed third,” said Equestrian Program Director Peggy McElveen. “The weather turned very cool and rainy the night before and the horses were definitely celebrating the cool weather the first few classes of the show.”

North Carolina State University finished first with Duke University second. The University of North Carolina Wilmington and East Carolina University rounded out the top five. Teams from UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte and Campbell University also competed.

St. Andrews riders Kathryn Owens, Dara Corbett, Briley Branden, Emilee Wilson, Katie Thomas, Mimi Taylor, Samantha Taylor, Zoe Cluck, Paola Sierra-Danielsen and Jordan Belanger finished first in their respective divisions, with Wilson earning Reserve High Point Rider of the show honors.

Kelsey Kocher, Sabrina Vlacich, Wilson, Mackenzie Parks, Madison Edwards, Sloan Stuntz, Mary Thomson and Charlie Robuck posted second place finishes.

Kocher, Branden, and Danaye Mokma added fourth place finishes to the team total.

Nikki Napoleone, Liz Shaffer, Caitlyn Woychik, and Rachel Gaardsmoe finished in fifth in their respective divisions.

Michelle Eld was sixth in Intermediate Flat. Cami Glaff and Reba Merrit finished in reserve in their respective divisions.

In addition to those students competing, several students from other areas of the equestrian program contributed to the success of the show, according to McElveen.

“Our students worked very hard all day - from 6 AM to 6 PM - getting horses ready for competition and taking care of the horses after they had performed,” McElveen said. “We would not be able to host shows for all these universities without the dedication of our students.”

The Hunter Seat Team will compete again on Oct. 19 at Rocky Point.

The Equestrian Center will next host a show on Oct. 26 with a Showing Under the Stars in-house competition.
