Therapeutic Horsemanship

What is the Curriculum like?

The Therapeutic Horsemanship program also utilizes opportunities for field experts to share in the classroom. During spring semester 2011, Molly Sweeney and K.C. Henry of Horses and Humans spoke with students and visited the Ride-Like-A-Knight program.

The Therapeutic Horsemanship program at St. Andrews is the first one of its kind in the United States. The program of study leads to a B. A. in Therapeutic Horsemanship, a degree which can open numerous career paths. And these career paths are within reach because of the strengths of St. Andrews. As a national liberal arts college that U.S. News & World Report ranks among the “Best National Liberal Arts Institutions,” St. Andrews has upheld its tradition of offering students a general education curriculum which has continually been recognized for its breadth and depth. And, in keeping with the college’s mission to encourage students to “transcend self-interest with a spirit of service,” St. Andrews students have a long tradition of caring. Students show dedication and compassion through their countless hours of community service with the “Ride-Like-A-Knight” Therapeutic Horsemanship program, and through their involvement with the Therapeutic Horsemanship Club.

Senior Experience :

Rachel McGarvey

I chose this program and St. Andrews after discovering I had a love for Therapeutic Horsemanship after my senior project in high school. I knew I wanted to pursue a career in Therapeutic Horsemanship. St. Andrews is nationally known for their equestrian programs and the Therapeutic aspect is very well in recognized therapeutic riding association such as PATH International.

This program gives you an unlimited amount of opportunities, from the teaching experience you receive when you leave here, working with Special Olympics and attending National and Regional conferences to further your education and meet others that are already in this field of work.  I enjoy being able to work with many other instructors because it allows me to bounce ideas off one another and learn different teaching methods and styles. Seeing the different teaching styles helps you learn and helps you to evaluate your own strengths and weaknesses.
The opportunities that I have had include: attending  2 national conferences (which includes every country), 3 regional conferences (which only includes North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia), become a Special Olympics Equestrian Coach in North Carolina and take a rider to the State games twice to compete for the weekend.  Through attending the PATH conferences I received the opportunity to volunteer and attend the American Hippotherapy Association National Conference this year.
