Alumni Giving

Why give to St. Andrews? Here are a few reasons.

We are a small, independent and non-profit university that depends on the support of alumni and friends to continue to provide scholarships for students. Your gift helps to keep tuition affordable, while providing current students with the same opportunities you experienced at St. Andrews. Your gift helps to close the gap between tuition revenue and the true cost of educating each student.

When you give to St. Andrews, you are helping to attract and retain dedicated and high-caliber faculty and staff for which the University is known. Your gift provides educational resources for our classrooms, and helps to upgrade technology across campus. Your donation may be used toward refurbishing and maintaining the facilities and grounds of our beautiful campus.

Foundations and corporations consider the percentage of alumni who give when St. Andrews applies for grants. When we solicit major donors, they too want to know that our alumni are supporting the University financially. Giving also increases our rankings in national publications.

All levels of giving are welcome. While a gift may seem small in comparison, taken together these gifts have a profound effect on the strength of the University.

Your gift may be matched by your employer, thereby doubling your gift. It will provide you not only with a possible tax benefit, but give you the satisfaction of supporting a place that has played an important role in your life. When you give to the place that means so much to you, you're doing something for yourself as well.

And it's a great feeling.

Our donors deserve recognition and thanks. Here is a list of alumni and others who have donated during 2013 - 2014.

Tax-wise Ways to Support St. Andrews

IRA Contributions

If you are 70½ or older and own an IRA, you may qualify to give all or part of your Required Minimum Distribution from your IRA to St. Andrews University and not have to pay federal income tax on the distribution. The distribution must be made this month because this provision of the law is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2013. In past years, this particular provision has been extended from time to time, but there are no guarantees that it will extend into 2014.

Appreciated Stock

If you own stock that has appreciated in value since the time you purchased it, and you've owned it for more than a year, you can give the stock to St. Andrews University and receive a federal income tax charitable deduction and avoid paying federal capital gains tax on the appreciation. Given the strong increases in stock values over the past year, this may be a very tax-advantaged way for you to support St. Andrews.

Gifts in Kind

If you own real estate or personal property such as vehicles, horses, farm equipment, or other assets that can be used for St. Andrews' charitable purposes, you may be able to give an asset like these and receive a federal income tax deduction.

If you would like to make a donation of these types, or simply like more information, please contact any one of the following and we'll be glad to help you.

Audre Charette, Director of Donor Records (910-277-5001)
Ellen Thompson, Director of Alumni Relations (910-277-5665)
