2006 Grade III EUSPBA Southern Branch Champions

The St. Andrews University Pipe Band was founded in 1991 as a project of the college’s Scottish Heritage Center. Since its founding the band has become one of the top competing pipe bands in the southern United States. The band is a member of the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association and competes successfully in Grade III, the highest level of competition currently available in the Southeast. Membership in the band has been comprised primarily of students from throughout the United States and Canada, though local and regional membership is also welcomed.

The band is active throughout the academic year and represents St. Andrews University at a number of Scottish Highland games and festivals as well as at other civic and cultural events.  The St. Andrews University Pipe Band is one of the college’s most visible organizations.  The band’s appearances place the St. Andrews identity before thousands of people each year.

The band’s recordings have also been featured on National Public Radio’s “The Thistle and Shamrock” as well as on BBC Radio Scotland’s programs “Crunluath” and “Traveling Folk.”  The beginning and end of the academic year at St. Andrews is always heralded by the sound of our prize-winning pipe band.

The St. Andrews University Pipe Band is competition oriented and has established an enviable reputation on the Eastern United States Pipe Band Association (www.euspba.org) competition circuit since its first appearance in 1992.  This feat is even more remarkable in the fact that the full band is only active during the academic year thus missing the active summer competition season. The band has competed successfully in Grade III since 1999 and was recently honored as the EUSPBA Grade III Southern Branch Champion for 2006 after winning both the March, Strathspey and Reel and Medley contests at the Loch Norman Highland Games. The band was founded and is instructed by Pipe Major Bill Caudill with drumming instruction by Tom Foote. The band wears the Earl of St. Andrews tartan.
